Feudalism had no such dominating influence in Spain and Italy, as in Northwest Europe. Both of these lands had the unique factors influencing warfare. In the Southern Italy Normans grew up from modest mercenaries to conquer all southern Italy and to found the great kingdom Sicily after gaining the island at Arabs. After the line of Norman kings ended when Wilhelm II died, without having left male successors, the throne was passed to the German imperial dynasty by Gogenshtaufenov.
